Cake Decorating World News Oldies But Goodies for those Not in the Know
Texas Cake Show The Capitol Confectioners cake club put on a great cake show in Austin on February 23-24th. The cakes were fantastic and so were the Demonstrations. The line-up included Bronwen Webber, Steven Stellingwerf, Autumn Carpenter, Nicholas Lodge and Earlene Moore! Two of our own cake club members brought home first place ribbons for wedding cake entries as well. Kim Wilson brought home a first place in the beginners class for her three tiered whimsical wedding cake and Dena Bryngelson brought home first place and best of class for her wedding cake entry in the Professional class. Denise Talbot and Betty Perrin worked for ICES helping man the ICES booth. There were fabulous vendors and cakes that were just so wonderful you would have had to been there to believe it. Must plan to attend next years event! This one is bigger and better every year bringing in cake decorators from around the country. There were people from Minnesota, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Michigan and all over Texas!
Penguin Shortening Wins over Southeast Texas Cake Club Members Not the only high ratio shortening on the market but it is our cake club favorite thanks to Pat Daigle. She used the same brand for more years than I even thought about decorating cake. Since the change in Crisco to it's new "health conscious" status...and very under whelming results in making icing...our entire club has switched our shortening to Penguin brand. Just seems necessary since Crisco left us bitter sweet.
International Cake Exploration Society there is a bigger better larger and "more better" club than our little Southeast Texas Cake Club. It's not local...it's international. If you aren't a member you should join. Benefits are pretty good because you get to hear about all the great things going on in the cake world. You get a newsletter and you get to travel to really expensive places that you may have never had an excuse to go to before. I kinda like that part even though a lot of other cake decorating hobbyists don't like the spending the money bit. It's not that I like spending lot's of cashola...it's just that I wouldn't have an excuse to go places I might not ever go if I weren't a member of good ol' ICES. Besides...what other convention would I ever see as a lowly cake decorating kinda chick? I think it's fun...and you just can't beat the breakfasts! Demo's are nice too.
American Cake Decorating Magazine For those who have never heard that there is a magazine out there devoted just to cake decorating....ACM (American Cake Decorating Magazine) Now you have heard. I can't say enough great stuff about the Grace McMillan publication. They have lead the forefront more than any other source out there in bringing the latest and greatest of everything to the cake decorating public. They feature articles about everything we want to know about. From basic skills to the new products available and books on the shelves...recipes and feature cake designs...I could go on and on...but you just need to see this one for yourself.
Mailbox News Sister publication to American Cake...but this one is different. It mostly features pictures...and we all know that old adage about a picture and what it's worth...a thousand words or something? I know I have more than a thousand thanks for this magazine and all the inspiration it has given me to look through the pages each time it shows up in my box. Best thing is that these are pictures of my cakes...your cakes...everyone's cakes. So send in your pictures to mailbox news so you can see them published. How Cool is that?
